Rally for a Better Athens
This Saturday, May 3rd, 3 pm
Athens City Hall
(rain location: New Earth Music Hall, corner of Dougherty & Hull St. downtown)
Join People for a Better Athens for an afternoon of awareness and protest as we speak out against Selig Enterprises’ plans for a 94,000 square foot Walmart on a riverfront lot in downtown Athens. Speakers include local business owners, a representative from Good Growth Dekalb (they are also opposing a Selig Walmart development), Spencer Frye of Habitat for Humanity, and others addressing issues of economic justice in light of studies that show Wal-Mart kills jobs.
Entertainment includes specially written protest songs from Joe Willey and The Better Athens String Band, Mary Sigalis backed up by Vicky Tavernier on guitar, and Timi Conley’s Hendrix-style Star-Spangled Banner backed up by performers from Canopy and Circus Athena.
Supervised kid’s activities will be available, so bring the entire family for an afternoon of positive public action and entertainment!
WE CAN DO BETTER!
