In Los Angeles, a Wal-Mart building permit is getting a once-over. In New York, the City Council is investigating a possible land deal with the retailer’s developer in Brooklyn. A state senator in California is pushing for a formal audit of a proposed Wal-Mart in San Diego. And in Boston and its suburbs, residents are pressuring politicians to disclose whether they have received contributions from the company.

Athens got a taste of Hollywood glamour the past couple of weeks when Clint Eastwood and other stars came to town.

And with glamour comes green. A four-day shoot for “Trouble With the Curve” at the downtown bar The Globe and other locations pumped thousands of dollars into the local economy. Artists and businesspeople are hoping the city gets a little more time in the spotlight.

Occupy Athens — formerly a fixture at the University of Georgia’s Arch — plans to stake out City Hall until the Athens-Clarke Commission agrees to hold four public hearings on the proposed downtown Walmart.

Occupy Athens members announced their intention to set up a tent city Saturday afternoon during a rally against the proposed WalMart on the steps of City Hall.

Black Athens residents say they’re starting to speak out in favor of a Walmart near downtown because they want the jobs it would bring to a poverty-stricken city.

But it may not bring any jobs. Several studies show that the employees the retail giant hire are offset by those who lose their jobs when competitors close up shop.

Photoshopped renderings of Oconee Street have been an entertaining diversion, but speak to the misinformation surrounding one of the most important civic discussions Athens has ever faced. The development of the Armstrong & Dobbs parcel will, for better or worse, have a tremendous impact on downtown Athens. With so much at stake, Athenians deserve an informed discussion.

According to the website set up by Selig Enterprises (www.seligathens.com) to provide information about its plans for a mixed-use development anchored by a Walmart in the eastern edge of downtown Athens, the company “look(s) forward to working with the greater Athens community to develop a project that is good for downtown, good for Athens, and good for the region.”
